My current big project is for my animation capstone class in which I am recreating a high poly, photo realistic model of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean The Black Pearl. I started with a flat plane to get the correct shape of the hull while using a schematic as a guide. I then used the split polygon tool and then tweaked the hull to follow the curvature using a top view schematic. Then I simply duplicated and merged.

Today I have some screen shots of more of the modeling processes and props on the Pearl. Here is the helm and stairs and the beginning of all that rigging.

All hands on deck! Here is what I have completed of the deck. Some of this shot is still a block out, such as the masts and rigging ropes. The cabin windows were created manually. By that I mean I didn’t use a poly extruded along a curve. Lesson learned…I’ve also included a close up of some of the detailed wood work.

I found this image of the ships rear detail. I have started making an outline of the basic shape and plan on using displacement maps for most of the intricut detail. If I had more time on this project I would completely model the design. However for now I just want to make sure I reach my deadline.
More to come soon!

Here is where I am at with the pearl. I went ahead and applied the texture to the hull to make sure everything looked right. Please ignore the giant floating rigging and chain, it’s just how I work. The red cube is a human size reference.

Here she is! I placed the model on land to save on render time due to computer limitations. However I do have ocean stills under the “Projects” section of this site.
